Ivan Ergić was born near the Croatian coastal town of Šibenik (Gaćelezi), however during the 1990s war his family moved to Perth, Australia and he started his football career with Perth Glory in 1999. In 2000 Ergić signed for Italian Juventus, but went on loan to FC Basel in Switzerland, later signing with them and playing until 2008 as captain. He spent nine years at the club and played over 200 matches. He then switched to Bursaspor of the Turkish Süper Lig. 2009-2011.

Since December 2008 Ergić has been writing occasional columns for the Serbian daily  Politika. He writes on issues related to professional sports from an insider's viewpoint. He has touched on various topics such as: male chauvinism in sports, the spirit of crude competition he considers to be unhealthy, the corporate machinery behind institutionalized sports and the lack of understanding in the public for professional athletes who do not fit lifestyle stereotypes created by sports media, fans, club management boards and leagues stakeholders and officials. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Ergi%C4%87

Ivan Ergić je rođen u Šibeniku (Gaćelezi). Za vrijeme rata s obitelji seli u australski Perth, gdje započinje nogometašku karijeru 1999. u klubu Perth Glory. Godine 2000. prelazi u Juventus, od kuda odlazi na posudbu u švicarski FC Basel. Zatim i prelazi u taj klub, gdje igra do 2008. kao kapetan momčadi u kojoj je igrao devet godina i odigrao preko 200 susreta. Zatim 2009. prelazi u turski Bursaspor.

Ergić od prosinca 2008. povremeno doprinosi kolumne za beogradsku Politika. Piše o tematici profesionalnog sporta sa insajderskog gledišta. Dotiče se tema kao muški šovinizam u sportu, tvrdokorni natjecateljski duh ( koga smatra nezdravim), financijska mašinerija u pozadini institucionaliziranog sporta i nedostatak razumijevanja u javnosti za profesionalne sportaše koji se ne uklapaju u stereotipe koje o njima stvaraju sportski mediji, fanovi, vodstva klubova i glavni službenici i "maheri" u sportskim ligama. http://www.snv.hr/tjednik-novosti/534/mafija-ima-uticaj-u-vecini-klubova/
